IPCC AR6 SPM: Overview

31 August 2021 – 5:00pm AEST

Overview

The ADC Forum hosted an online session with one of Australia’s foremost international experts, Professor Will Steffen for an exclusive online briefing for ADC100 and Advisory Council members on what the recent IPCC report means for Australia.

Program

The recent IPCC report sounded another dire warning for our world. The headlines are talking about a “code red” in terms of global temperature rises and the prospects are grim. But it is not just about temperature – the shift in global systems caused by human influence is bringing “widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere”, the IPCC says.  What does that mean for Australia? What are the threats relating to our nation continent and how can we and should we respond? It is not only a question of what governments can and should do, but also how do businesses and investors respond?

Professor Will Steffen will provide us not only insights about the threats, but will also discuss how we must respond. Will Steffen, who is also a former IPCC report author, will talk about the imperatives for change as well as the opportunities this presents. ‘Failure is not an option’ argues Steffen – after a lost decade on climate action, the 2020s offer one last chance.

This briefing will provide deep insights on an issue which is of existential significance to our businesses and our lives, followed by a roundtable discussion.

Will Steffen is Emeritus Professor ANU, Climate Council Australia.
